Your foster parent license is valid for 2 years.
Once you become a licensed foster parent, you are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education (Renewal CEUs) each year to renew your license. This means 24 total Renewal CEUs over a two-year licensing period.
Please note that CEUs do not roll over from year to year—you must complete at least 12 hours each year. If the required hours are not completed in the first year, you may be placed on a performance improvement plan and could face financial penalties.
**If you accept placement of a youth who requires a higher level of care, you must complete additional CEUs (High Level CEUs). Renewal CEUs do not count towards High Level CEUs.**
RENEWAL CEUs: YEAR 1
For the first year, we recommend you take:CPR (6 hours): This training helps you respond quickly and calmly in everyday situations—not just emergencies.
MANDT (8 hours): This training isn’t about expecting behavior issues—it’s about understanding, preventing, and safely responding when emotions run high.
Medication Aide (2 hours): This training allows you to safely support children who need routine or short-term medication.
We understand that our recommendation goes above the State mandated requirements, however these trainings are proven in helping prepare you for the unexpected, feeling confident in the moment, and being able to support the widest range of children safely and effectively.
RENEWAL CEUs: YEAR 2
For the second year, you are required to take: (1) Reasonable Prudent Parent Standard (RPPS), (2) Human Trafficking (3) Sexual Trauma, (4) Suicide Prevention, (5) Car Seat Training, (6) MANDT recertification (if applicable), (7) Additional Renewal CEUs to reach 12 hours.HIGH LEVEL CEUs
If you accept placement of a youth who requires a higher level of care, you must complete additional CEUs (High Level CEUs). Renewal CEUs do not count towards High Level CEUs. High Level CEUs must be completed within 60 days of placement and each year thereafter that the youth is in your care. High Level CEUs can’t be used for multiple youth. See the hour requirements below:Tier 4 (Intensive Plus): 5 additional hours
Tier 5 (Specialized Level of Care): 10 additional hours
